BROOKLYN — Great musical talent comes out of Brooklyn, but many of the borough's talented songwriters, lyricists and, in some cases, singers go “unsung” and unknown to those enjoying their sounds. The names of those who write the words are most often the ones forgotten although their lyrics live on for generations.
 

The lyrics of Marty Symes most remembered are: “Under a Blanket of Blue,” “It’s the Talk of the Town” and “Darkness on the Delta” to name a few. Symes collaborated with many popular songwriters. In 1936 Isham Jones wrote the music and Symes wrote the words to “There is No Greater Love,” which has become a standard with much help from music world stars such as Guy Lombardo, Billie Holiday and Al Hibbler.
 

A Jewish couple, William and Esther Simon, moved to Canarsie around the turn of the century and owned a candy store on Rockaway Parkway and Avenue L. One of their sons, Moe, born on April 30, 1904, loved music and began writing songs using his stage name Marty Symes. Marty died June 16, 1953.
