A physician whose Brooklyn roots go back a century presented a $1 million check to SUNY Downstate on Wednesday, endowing a professorship in anesthesiology in his name.

SUNY Downstate Medical Center President John C. LaRosa, M.D., accepted the gift from Garry S. Sklar, M.D., and his wife Sarah.

Dr. Sklar served on Downstate’s anesthesiology faculty from 1974 to 1978. During that time, he administered anesthesia during many surgical procedures, clinical experiences that led to leadership positions at several prominent hospitals.

Distinguished Service Professor and Chair of Anesthesiology James E. Cottrell, M.D., said the Garry S. Sklar Professorship of Anesthesiology will focus on basic science research that results in clinical outcomes improvement, known as translational research, and the cognitive and behavioral effects of anesthesia during surgery.
