B11 Bus Line To Be Re-Routed for 50th Street Repaving Over Next Few Weeks

BOROUGH PARK – After successfully convincing the city Department of Transportation to repave the worst stretch of 50th Street, Councilman David G. Greenfield (D-Borough Park/Midwood) is alerting residents, motorists and bus riders of the upcoming schedule changes for milling and repaving work.

The repaving project, which includes 50th Street from Eighth Avenue to 20th Avenue, is expected to begin next week and take up to six weeks to complete. The heavily used stretch of 50th Street that will be affected has long been a source of frustration and complaints from Borough Park residents, and convincing the DOT to repair it has been a priority of Greenfield’s since he took office two years ago.

The milling work, which involves cutting the street up to prepare it for repaving, began yesterday and should be finished by Friday, April 27. During this week, parts of 50th Street will periodically be completely closed to traffic and parking, even for residents who live on the block.

Once the milling is completed, the street will reopen to traffic and parking for two to three weeks. After that time, the street will once again be closed for repaving. Signs advising residents of parking restrictions will be posted on impacted blocks one day prior to milling and paving, so drivers are reminded to be on the lookout for such notifications. Cars that are not moved will be towed and relocated to the nearest available parking spot in the neighborhood.

In addition to street closures, the B11 bus will be re-routed from 50th Street to 52nd Street between 8th Avenue and 20th Avenue from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. each day next week. It will stop at the same cross streets along 52nd Street as it normally does along 50th Street, and signs will be posted at the six impacted stops informing riders of the new temporary locations.

In cases where 52nd Street is blocked by fuel trucks or sanitation vehicles, the B11 will re-route to 60th Street, which could lead to further delays for riders. This follows standard practice for the B11 when 50th Street is blocked.

“I am pleased that the DOT has agreed with me that 50th Street is in desperate need of repairs, and I’m confident this project will represent a major upgrade for all local residents and anyone who travels through the area. As work is taking place, I urge residents with questions or concerns to immediately contact my office so we can minimize any disruptions this project causes,” said Greenfield.
