Poetry Is the Focus at powerHouse Arena Reading

DUMBO — On Thursday, April 26, from 7 to 9 p.m., the powerHouse Arena, 37 Main St., will host a party to launch the latest issue of American Poet, the magazine of the Academy of American Poets, with readings by some of the poets who are represented in this issue.

The poets who are scheduled to read include:

Thomas Sayers Ellis, the author of Skin, Inc. (Graywolf Press, 2010). His collection The Maverick Room (2005), won the John C. Zacharis First Book Award from Ploughshares. Ellis is the recipient of a Mrs. Giles Whiting Writers’ Award, and his poems and photographs have appeared in numerous journals and anthologies. He is an assistant professor of writing at Sarah Lawrence College.

Sandra Beasley, the author of I Was the Jukebox (W.W. Norton, 2010), which won the Barnard Women Poets Prize, and Theories of Falling (2008), which won the New Issues Poetry Prize. Other honors for her work include selection for the 2010 Best American Poetry, the 2010 University of Mississippi Summer Poet in Residence position, the Friends of Literature Prize from the Poetry Foundation, and more.

Yusef Komunyakaa, a former chancellor of the Academy of American Poets and the author of 13 books of poetry, including The Chameleon Couch (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2012), Warhorses (2009), Taboo (2006) and Neon Vernacular (1993), for which he received the Pulitzer Prize and the Kingsley Tufts Award. He teaches at New York University.
