The New York Times yesterday featured a long article about the impact of Barclays Arena on the neighboring business community. It points out that landlords are asking for high rents when storekeepers seek to renew their leases, and that “unglamorous” businesses like hardware stores, drugstores, plumbing supply stores and the like are slowly disappearing, replaced by stores selling exotic cheeses, expensive shoes and party dresses as well as restaurants bearing names like Fish and Sip. “Visitors will find a purveyor of artisanal mayonnaise, an 'eco-friendly bar’ made of recycled oak floorboards from an old dairy farm, and, not far from the arena, Bark Hot Dogs, which offers franks topped with 'baked heirloom beans,'” says the Times.
