One hundred years ago, Japan gave 3,020 cherry trees to the U.S. to celebrate Sakura Matsuri, the cherry blossom festival, and as a symbol of friendship. The trees were planted in two parks in Manhattan and Washington, D.C. Today, the Japanese Consulate and the Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) will plant a flowering Yoshino cherry tree on the garden’s Cherry Walk to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the gift. BBG’s own Sakura Matsuri Festival will take place April 28 and 29.
