Brooklyn College Provost Defended By Colleagues

A group of more than 40 department chairs and professors signed an open letter recently defending Provost William Tramontano against charges of anti-Semitism in respect to promotion and tenure. The signatories point out that the college’s president, not the provost, reviews these decisions and that it was President Karen L. Gould who denied Professor Kass-Schreibman’s application on academic grounds. In another case, as this newspaper reported, the entire search for a faculty member was abandoned because it was determined that guidelines had not been followed. Signatories include chairs of the Anthropology, Childhood Education, Modern Languages and Literature, Chemistry, African Studies, Political Science, Secondary Education, Film, Computer Science, Biology, Art, Music, Judaic Studies, School Psychology, TV and Radio, English, History and Classics departments.
