Just-Ine Time: BC Senior O’Callahan Named to ECAC All-Star Squad

Though March Madness is behind us, Brooklyn’s top college hoops stars continue to receive notice for the brilliant seasons they’ve put together.

Though the Bulldogs of Brooklyn College ultimately fell short of capturing their first-ever CUNYAC Championship last month, senior co-captain Justine O’Callahan was recognized for her outstanding contributions to the Bulldogs program after being named to the ECAC Metro All-Star Team.

O’Callahan, a native of Floral Park, received Second Team honors after averaging 10.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game for the Bulldogs, who established a program record with 22 wins under coach Alex Lang, including a perfect 11-0 mark in conference play.

“I am honored to be chosen for this award,” said O’Callahan, an exercise-science major who wishes to attend chiropractic school following her graduation. “I am proud to represent my team as we worked hard every day at practice to make this a special season.”

After being named to All-CUNYAC teams following her junior and senior seasons, O’Callahan also was tabbed CUNYAC Player of the Week in January and BC’s Student-Athlete of the Month for November.

Only the fourth player in BC history to reach 1,000 career points, O’Callahan will be sorely missed.

“She had a tremendous career for us and it is great to see her honored as a senior who worked hard for four years, helping our program grow to where we are now,” Lang said.

Berkeley College announced that junior guard Kaseem Williams, a product of Brooklyn’s reigning three-time city championship team from Boys and Girls High School, has been named to the All-American Honor Roll by the United States Collegiate Athletic Association (USCAA) for men’s basketball. Former Boys and Girls star Kaseem Williams is earning high marks for his play at Berkeley College.

Williams, who attends the school’s Manhattan campus, also earned All-Tournament honors for his performance in the USCAA Men’s Division II National Championships, during which he averaged 17.8 points per game.

“Kaseem has been a pivotal force for the unprecedented success we have enjoyed the last two years with our men’s basketball program,” said Berkeley athletic director Brian Maher. “His leadership, both on and off the court, has garnered respect for the program at the local and national levels.”

Brooklyn College junior center fielder Kim Konklewski was named the CUNYAC Softball Player of the Week on Monday.

Konklewski played an integral role in helping BC go 3-1 for the week, including a doubleheader sweep of conference rival John Jay College of Criminal Justice. The Bulldogs swept the Bloodhounds by scores of 6-2 and 5-2. BC also split a twin bill against New Jersey City University.

For the week, Konklewski batted .562 (9-for-16) out of the leadoff spot with six RBIs and four runs scored, to go along with a triple and a stolen base. She also posted a .562 on-base percentage and a .688 slugging average.

Konklewski combined to go 6-for-8 with an RBI and three runs scored against John Jay. She would continue to swing a hot bat as the Bulldogs took on NJCU, going 3-for-8 with five RBIs and a run scored.

The LIU Brooklyn softball team used the long ball to pound Bryant en route to a doubleheader sweep on Sunday in Smithfield, R.I.

Freshmen Paris Shipp and Nichole Toven each blasted two homers and drove in four runs as the Blackbirds rolled to an 18-4 rout in the opener before the power assault continued during a 6-3 triumph in the nightcap.

After Shipp and Toven teed off in Game 1, fellow freshman Nicole Archer belted a pair of longballs in the nightcap, helping LIU improve to 11-28 this season.

The LIU Brooklyn womenâ€™s golf team took top prize at last weekendâ€™s Monmouth University Hawk Invitational in Lakewood, N.J.

The LIU Brooklyn women’s golf team won the Monmouth University Hawk Invitational on Sunday in Lakewood, N.J.

Reigning NEC Golfer of the Week Brianna Maynard led the Blackbirds with rounds of 77 and 78 to finish in a tie for third place in the individual standings.

Senior Anna Palsson and freshman Alice Boothroyd finished tied for eighth, with Palsson knocking in an 80-77 and Boothroyd posting a 76-81. Freshman Cristina Felip was 11th, carding rounds of 84-75. Senior Julia Rappa rounded out the slate for the Blackbirds, finishing tied for 23rd.

The women’s golf team is back in action April 13-14 for the Columbia Roar-EE Invitational.

The NYU-Polytechnic menâ€™s volleyball team established a program record for victories with two wins Sunday. The NYU-Poly men’s volleyball team rebounded from a tough loss to NYU on Saturday by picking up a pair of Skyline Conference wins over Mount Saint Vincent and Purchase colleges in quad match action held at Ramapo College Sunday.

With the wins, NYU-Poly improved to 11-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference. The 11 wins mark an all-time best for the program, which won 10 matches last season.

NYU-Poly will host John Jay on Thursday for Senior Night.
