An 11-month-old Brooklyn baby is dead after apparently being left alone in a bathtub by his mother Sunday afternoon, according to NBC New York.

Elijah Pardella was found unconscious in the tub at around 2:30 p.m. by his mother, who had reportedly left her son and 3-year-old daughter unattended while she went to another room in her East New York apartment. When she returned, Elijah was underwater and not breathing, as reported by NBC New York.

The 3-year-old girl, who was also in the bathtub, was unharmed.

The mother had left the drain unplugged when she left the room, but Elijah apparently blocked it and the tub filled with water, according to police sources who spoke to the New York Post.

He was taken to Brookdale Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police questioned and later released the mother, and an investigation into the death is ongoing, according to NBC New York.

Elijah is the second Brooklyn child in a week to have apparently drowned while unattended in a bathtub. On Thursday, a 5-year-old girl died in Bedford-Stuyvesant after having been briefly left alone in a bathtub by her caretaker.
