Good morning. Today is the 83rd day of the year. On this day in 1905, actress Joan Crawford was born as Lucille LaSeuer in San Antonio, Texas. She became a star in one of Hollywood’s last silents, Our Dancing Daughters, in 1928. Crawford won an Oscar in 1945 for her role in Mildred Pierce. Other films for which she was well known include The Women, Flamingo Road and Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? .

Well-known people who were born today include singer Chaka Khan, record-breaking long distance runner Dr. Roger Bannister, basketball player James Kidd, Hall of Fame basketball player Moses Malone and actress Andrea Plummer.

Today from 4 to 5 p.m. at I.S. 218, the Police Athletic League will host its annual Girlsport Day. Girls in third through eighth grades will participate in an afternoon of fun and fitness as they compete in jump rope, long jump, jumping jacks, sit-ups and other fun activities. …

Also tomorrow and Sunday, the Brooklyn Lyceum, 227 Fourth Ave., will present the Brooklyn Mutt Show, in which all dogs, not only pedigreed ones, can participate. In addition to the contest, attendees can visit the vendor displays to see the latest products for dogs, and meet and mingle with other doggie moms and dads.
