Dance majors at LIU Brooklyn soared at the 2012 Northeast Regional Conference of the American College Dance Festival (ACDF) last week, earning honors for their outstanding choreography and performance.

Nate Hunt, a junior B.F.A. dance major at LIU Brooklyn, had his choreography selected for performance at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., in May.

The goal of ACDF is to support and promote the talent and creativity that is prominent throughout college and university dance departments. A panel of nationally recognized dance professionals annually adjudicates the choreography and performance of participating schools region by region. The adjudicating body then chooses dances to be presented at its gala concerts.

The ACDF Northeast regionals were held at Penn State the first weekend in March. Out of 42 works, both works presented by LIU Brooklyn were chosen by the panel for the Northeast Regions Gala Concert.

LIU dance majors performed “Exotica” by guest artist Ronald K. Brown and “Different Shades of Grey” by Nate Hunt as part of the Gala Concert on March 5.

“Ours was the only undergraduate program that had both works chosen for the concert,” said Dana Hash-Campbell, chair of LIU Brooklyn’s Performing Arts Department and coordinator of the dance program. “For those not in the know, this is the college dance equivalent of winning the NCAA Championships!”

In further good news, the adjudicating panel selected only three works to represent the Northeast at the National American College Dance Festival Conference and Hunt’s piece was one of those three. LIU dance majors will perform his “Different Shades of Grey” at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., from May 24 to May 27.
