Community Board Publicizes Rules for Passover Bread Burning
BOROUGH PARK — Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty will extend full cooperation to insure the continuance of a tradition started 46 years ago by Rabbi Edgar Gluck of Community Board 12.
Rabbi Edgar Gluck, together with Alan Dubrow, chairman of Community Board 12, and Wolf Sender, district manager, met with officials from the sanitation, fire and police departments, along with community organizations, to devise a plan for the bread-burning cleanup.
Bread burning, which is part of the traditional Passover observance because eating of only unleavened bread is mandated during the holiday, will take place on Friday, April 6. All bread, or “chometz” (bread products, such as cake), must be burned by noon.
