CYPRESS HILLS (AP) — Authorities say the death of a 23-month-old Brooklyn boy has been ruled a homicide and his mother's companion has been charged in the case.

Police say the boy, Jacquil Degraffenreid of Shepherd Avenue in Cypress Hills, was found unconscious early Saturday after his mother returned home. They say she apparently had left him in the care of her companion and called 911.

The boy was pronounced dead at Kings County Hospital.

According to The New York Times, the medical examiner says the cause of death was “lacerations of the liver and pancreas with internal hemorrhage due to blunt-impact injuries.”

Police arrested Tyree Wright and charged him with felony assault and acting in a manner injurious to a child.

It wasn’t immediately clear if he had a lawyer.

The case remains under investigation.
