Bay Ridgeite to lead N.Y.C. St. Pat’s Parade

Based on my research, to my knowledge, this is the first time a Bay Ridge resident will be leading the country’s oldest continuous parade, New York City’s 251st annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade on Saturday, March 17.

Irish historian and author John RidgeCelebrating 250 Years of the New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade.

On Sunday, March 18, the Brooklyn parade will kick off at 1 p.m., from 15th Street and Prospect Park West, and go down 15th Street to Seventh Avenue, proceed along Seventh Avenue and then up Garfield Place to Prospect Park West and back to 15th Street.

The reviewing grandstand will be at Bartel Pritchard Circle at 14th Street. According to parade officials, immediately prior to the step-off, there will be a brief re-dedication ceremony to the heroes and victims of 9/11.

The 2012 parade theme is The Intertwined Histories of Ireland and America. In addition, the parade — which was founded in 1975 and originally called the Brooklyn Irish-American Parade — will be commemorating the Bicentennial of the War of 1812.

On the same day, at 9 a.m., there will be a mass conducted by Bishop Octavio CisnerosHugh Carey and Kevin Patrick CarrollKevin Peter Carroll

You better believe Public Advocate Bill de Blasio is in full mayoral candidate mode now. De Blasio, who is rarely seen in any ethnic or patriotic parade, participated in two St. Patrick’s Day marches this past Sunday, one in Queens, and the other in Staten Island.

The Long Island Assembly #703 of the Knights of Columbus, which was founded in 1912, is celebrating its 100th anniversary. Members of the assembly are Catholic men from local Brooklyn and Queens churches who have reached the fourth or patriotic degree within the Knights of Columbus, which is the largest Catholic fraternal and lay organization in the world. The head of each K of C assembly is known as the Faithful Navigator.

On Sunday, March 25 at noon, the Long Island Assembly #703 will hold its 100th anniversary dinner dance at the Rex Manor Catering Hall, 1100 60th Street. Guests of honor will be the past Faithful Navigators of this local assembly, as well as the current helmsman Frank Strauch.

Brooklyn Democrats for Change, a local political club, held its March meeting and formally endorsed the following candidates and incumbents for re-elections. They include New York’s junior senator, Kirsten GillibrandJerry NadlerDiane SavinoFelix Ortiz and Alec Brook–KrasnyMark MurphyAndrew Gounardes and Assembly candidate John Mancuso.
