NEW YORK (AP) — A New York City police officer who was shot in the head last month attended a court hearing and looked his accused shooter straight in the eye.
Detective Kevin Brennan and his wife, Janet, watched from the front row as Luis Ortiz pleaded not guilty to attempted murder on Monday.
Police say Brennan was shot Jan. 31 during a struggle with Ortiz in Bushwick. The bullet lodged against his skull.
The Daily News reports that while lawyers huddled with the judge, Brennan stared at Ortiz from across the room.
About 50 police officers filled the courtroom.
Brennan suffered mild brain damage from the bullet, which mostly caused a loss of some peripheral vision.
Ortiz has another court hearing on April 16.
