BOERUM HILL – A top aide to U.S. Rep. Michael Grimm (R-Bay Ridge-Staten Island) was arrested Feb. 17 on charges of assaulting his 14-year-old son outside the boy’s school after the youngster got into a disciplinary problem in school, the New York Daily News reported.

Liam Ambrose McCabe, 33, director of community relations in Grimm’s Brooklyn office, was arrested at 1 p.m. on Dean Street after police spotted him holding his son’s arms and shaking the boy, the Daily News reported.

McCabe had been called to the school, the Math and Science Exploratory School, at 345 Dean St., because his son had gotten into trouble.

McCabe became enraged and assaulted the boy when they left the school building, according to the Daily News, which also reported that the incident was witnessed by police officers.

McCabe was arrested and charged with assault, harassment, menacing, and endangering the welfare of a child. He was released from jail without bail. McCabe lives in Bay Ridge.

Grimm suspended McCabe in the wake of the arrest. The congressman released a statement on the situation. “These are serious charges that have not been taken lightly. Liam has been a hard-working member of my staff, however, I have suspended his employment in my office until the results of the official investigation become known,” the statement reads.

McCabe has worked for Grimm since the congressman first took office in January of 2011. He is a familiar face at various meetings of civic organizations, luncheons, and other community functions in the Brooklyn end of Grimm’s district.

For a period in 2008-09, McCabe wrote a column about conservative politics for the Bay Ridge Eagle called “The Happy Warrior.”
