NEW YORK (AP) — Two Occupy Wall Street protesters have sued the city, saying a New York Police Department inspector caused them permanent physical and psychological injuries when he pepper sprayed them last fall.

The lawsuit was filed in federal court in Manhattan last Wednesday against the city, the police department, the inspector and other unidentified police officers. It was brought by Chelsea Elliott of Brooklyn and Jeanne Mansfield of Boston.

The lawsuit said the inspector pepper sprayed them on Sept. 24 when they were participating in a protest rally in Manhattan. Video from the incident shows the two crumple on the sidewalk in pain.

The lawsuit blamed the city, saying it failed to properly train its police to handle constitutionally protected demonstrations.

The city law office said they hadn’t seen the lawsuit yet.
