With this week’s grand reopening of the Brooklyn Detention Complex, or Brooklyn House of Detention, defendants who have been remanded in jail or cannot post bail will now be housed just down the street from the Kings County Supreme Court Criminal Term. While many local residents have long opposed the reopening of the 759-bed jail in Boerum Hill, the court system and correction department are relieved to no longer have to transport so many inmates back and forth from Rikers Island to the courts in Brooklyn and Staten Island.

Brooklyn jail inmates will receive a comb, OraLine toothpaste, a miniature toothbrush that is likely too small to be carved into a deadly shank, a pair of black slip-on canvas shoes, plastic storage bins, a green plastic mug, and a matching forest-green jumpsuit.
