BROOKLYN — In recognition of Black History Month, LIU Brooklyn and the YWCA of Brooklyn will present the Brooklyn premiere of the film More Than a Month, along with a discussion with its writer and director Shukree Hassan Tilghman.

The free screening, held in association with WNET and ITVS, will take place Thursday, Feb. 16, at 6 p.m. in the campus’ Kumble Theater for the Performing Arts.

The film follows Tilghman, a 29-year-old African-American filmmaker, on his cross-country campaign to end the celebration of Black History Month. Through this tongue-in-cheek journey, More Than a Month explores the issue of relegating an entire group’s history to one month and investigates what the treatment of history tells us about race and equality in a “post-racial” America.

Dr. Carol Allen, chair of the African Studies Program at LIU Brooklyn, will serve as moderator.

The YWCA of Brooklyn, whose motto is “Eliminating Racism, Empowering Women,” is co-sponsoring this screening through its partnership with PBS. The film will air on PBS stations nationwide later this month.

The event is free and open to the public.

Kumble Theater is located on Flatbush Avenue, between DeKalb Avenue and Willoughby Street, in Downtown Brooklyn. For tickets, please email [email protected] or call the Kumble box office at (718) 488-1624. For additional information, please email communi [email protected].
