Local luminaries gathered at the Yellow Hook Grille earlier thismonth to celebrate the publication of a new book about BayRidge.

Bay Ridge Etc.-written by Ted General, Jack LaTorre and PeterScarpa for the Bay Ridge Historical Society – brings together awealth of photos from the community’s distant and recent past, tocreate a vivid portrait of a neighborhood that started out as afarming community and gradually transformed into a quintessentiallyurban community whose architecture is as varied as the multiplicityof restaurants lining its commercial thoroughfares.

Besides a plethora of images of Bay Ridge’s graciousstreetscape, the volume also contains photos of parades andproclamations, athletes in uniform, and elected officials andcommunity activists and residents past and present, to create arecord of some of the changes that Bay Ridge has undergone over thedecades, noted LaTorre, who is the current president of theHistorical Society (Scarpa is president emeritus).

We are holding our own as time goes on, LaTorre added. BayRidge is still a great place to live.

The book costs $20, with all proceeds going to the historicalsociety, and is available by contacting [email protected] orat the BookMark Shoppe, 8415 Third Avenue. A book-signing will beheld at the store on Saturday, January 21, from 7 to 9 p.m.
