FORT GREENE — American Candy, a Brooklyn-based sketch comedy group, announces its 21st show since its June 2009 debut, “American Candy: Love is Magic!”

American Candy’s witty, adult writing, original musical comedy, clever use of themes, multicultural casting and strong female-led writing staff set it apart from traditional and popular sketch comedy shows. The show, produced by creator Hollie Harper and Patranila Jefferson, always hits the deeply under-served adult women demographic.

American Candy creator Hollie Harper says, “I love the fact that our writing hits the 20-something crowd along with those who remember the Challenger, “Soul Train” and Watergate. We draw on history and culture and don’t pander to kids.”

The “Love is Magic” theme comes from the creator Hollie Harper’s favorite types of films. “All the greats have magic in them!” she says. “Chocolat, Splash and Big all have elements of mysticism.”

Because the theme is established and all of its sketches are completed before rehearsal starts, the three-week rehearsal cycle becomes an intense incubator of creativity. Some of the more established actors have made the transition to writer/director. AC Jermyn, Marvin Telp and Matt Wise have all made the leap to writer/director status, joining veteran writers Stephanie Bok, Dawn Fraser and head writer Hollie Harper. Producer Patranila Jefferson also directs several pieces.

This first American Candy show of 2012 runs three nights, February 9, 10 and 11, at South Oxford Space, 138 South Oxford St., Fort Greene.
