Carl Hum To Leave Post at Brooklyn Chamber

Led Business Group For Over Four Years

The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce Tuesday announced that Carl Hum, president and CEO of the organization, will resign his duties effective Jan. 31.

“Carl was an exceptional leader of the Brooklyn Chamber at an exceptional time of economic uncertainty for our borough and nation. He was an outspoken advocate for Brooklyn’s business community and more importantly, instituted vital financial and operational efficiencies that will ensure the chamber’s longevity,” said Peter Meyer, chairman of the chamber’s Board of Directors and president-NYC Market of TD Bank.

 

During his four-plus years in office, Hum:

 

• Increased the chamber’s membership by 5 percent to more than 1,000 members;

 

• Quadrupled enrollment in Brooklyn HealthWorks, the chamber’s low-cost health insurance program for small businesses;

 

• Launched the Neighborhood Entrepreneurship Program, a neighborhood-based economic development and job creation initiative;

 

• Fought against what the chamber considered undue legislative burdens on the business community; and

 

• Created a structure to establish a licensed health insurance brokerage.

 

Hum was recently appointed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo to serve on the Regional Economic Development Council for New York City. He was also an appointee of Mayor Michael Bloomberg on the boards of the Brooklyn Navy Yard and Coney Island Development Corporation.

 

“It’s been a great honor to work with the chamber board and staff,” said Hum. “The Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has an unparalleled track record of serving the borough’s business community for over nine decades and will continue to do so for at least another 90 years. I am proud and humbled to be part of that illustrious history.”

 

On the subject of his future plans, Hum only said that, “There comes a time in everyone’s life when you need to take a step back, take a deep breath, and assess where you are. That time has come for me. It’s been a great pleasure working with the chamber and its membership.”

 

The chamber’s existing senior management team — Vice Presidents Rick Russo, Jeanette Nigro and Dean Mohs — will assume the day-to-day leadership of the chamber on an interim basis while a comprehensive search for Hum’s replacement will take place.

 

Borough President Marty Markowitz said, “Under Carl Hum’s leadership, the Brooklyn Chamber of Commerce has played a major role in helping Brooklyn’s businesses weather the economic downturn, whether through expanding innovative initiatives like the Brooklyn HealthWorks program to assist small businesspeople with low-cost health care, or partnering with the city on the New York City Business Solutions Center, which helps businesses start, operate and expand in New York City. Those are the kinds of initiatives that helped push Brooklyn to the forefront of the city’s economic recovery by creating 14,000 new jobs in 2010. I wish Carl well as he moves on to the next chapter in his life, and look forward to the appointment of the next Chamber president who will build on his successes and make Brooklyn an ever better place to work and do business.”
