Banking is much easier for those living and working west ofFourth Avenue and below 50th Street in Sunset Park since a localbank moved in at 140 58th Street in May, 2010.

Now, Alma Bank hopes to continue its mission of bringing bankingto areas that are underbanked and underserved by partnering witharea business and community leaders to transform the primarilyindustrial area with spruced-up blocks and more mixed-usedevelopments that combine residential and commercial spaces, amongother things.

With the support of the community, we agreed to do a major focusin four key areas, said Nellie Piranio, relationship manager forthe Sunset Park branch.

These areas include providing affordable retail and loan products, financial education in collaboration with [local] nonprofits suchas the Southwest Brooklyn Industrial Development Corporation(SBIDC), focusing on mixed-use properties, and launching a pilotprogram to spruce up one block in Sunset Park, chosen with thehelp of the Sunset Park Redevelopment Committee.

The Sunset Park Alma Bank location is open 24 hours.
