Health Dept spraying for West Nile in southwest Brooklyn

The NYC Department of Health will be spraying pesticides inparts of Greenwood Heights, Windsor Terrace and Park Slope thisWednesday, August 3, between the hours of 8:15 p.m. and 6 a.m. thefollowing morning.

The spraying is a preventive measure to halt the spread of theWest Nile virus, which is transmitted through mosquitos. Thepesticide in question – known as Anvil – is aimed at reducingmosquito activity.

In case of bad weather, the spraying will be postponed toThursday, August 4, also between 8:15 p.m. and 6 a.m. the followingmorning.

Spraying will be conducted in an area bordered by WashingtonAvenue to the east, 20th Street, Prospect Park West and EasternParkway to the north, 45th Street and Fifth Avenue to the west, andFort Hamilton Parkway and Caton Avenue to the south.

These areas include zip codes 11215, 11218, 11219, 11225, 11226,11232 and 11238.

Common mosquito breeding grounds include areas with standingwater, so make sure to cover or drain any outdoor pools, removeexcess water from pool covers and backyard furniture, and to clearoutdoor drains. Also, individuals over age three should use anapproved insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin or oil oflemon eucalyptus.

Other precautions include:

Make sure windows have screens without tears or holes.

Dispose of containers that can collect water.

Make sure roof gutters are clean and draining properly.

Clean and chlorinate swimming pools, outdoor saunas and hottubs. Drain or cover when not in use. Drain pool covers.

Report standing water by calling 3-1-1 or visitingwww.nyc.gov/health/wnv.
