GOP leader reminds prez: there are Republicans here

Regardless of what people throughout the country thought of the debates, support for President Barack Obama is strong in traditionally Democratic Brooklyn.

To this end, Obama supporters opened not one, but two Brooklyn offices in Boerum Hill (216 Dean St.) and Bedford-Stuyvesant (631 Throop Ave.), on Friday.

Both offices, along with a third in Jamaica, Queens, will be open from noon to 9 p.m. every day as places to hand out campaign literature, make phone calls, and organize trips to swing states (states that could “swing” in either direction in the election.)

Rob Diamond, New York state director of Organizing for America (a “grass-roots” arm of the Democratic National Committee), said, “OFA-NY is excited to bring these three new offices into the fold to serve as a home for the president’s supporters in Brooklyn and Queens.

“These offices will help the president’s campaign reach out to more volunteers and gives our supporters immediate access to what is the largest grassroots campaign in American political history.”

Meanwhile, according to Bay Ridge attorney Craig Eaton, chair of the Brooklyn Republican Party, there is no Mitt Romney for President office in Brooklyn, as such.

However, according to another well-known Brooklyn Republican, a joint campaign office at 8112 Third Ave. for state Sen. Marty Golden, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis and Congressman Michael Grimm also handles Romney campaign literature.

Eaton recalled that he was at the recent Al Smith Dinner for charity at the Waldorf-Astoria, where both Obama and Gov. Romney were the keynote speakers and traded good-natured barbs with each other.

At one point, Eaton was introduced to Obama as the leader of the Brooklyn Republican Party.

“I didn’t know there were any Republicans in Brooklyn,” said Obama.

“There are more than 113,000 of us,” said Eaton. At that point, Obama shook his hand.
