Over 350 runners from 48 teams representing the Public School Athletic League, Catholic High School Athletic Association and numerous independent school leagues competed in last weekend’s prestigious Mayor’s Cup Cross-Country race over the rugged hills of Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx.

And when all was said and done, Brooklyn’s own Theresa “Tessy” Gallagher of Bishop Kearney High School beat them all, sprinting to the front from the start and holding off the pack at the finish to earn the distinction of being crowned 2012 Mayor’s Cup Champion.

Not far behind the gold medalist was her sister, Jackie Gallagher, who took home the third-place medal. Finishing fifth overall was Kearney’s Kailey O’Grady, giving the Brooklyn school a near-sweep of the top podium spots at the annual event.

This Saturday, the trio will lead Kearney back onto the track at the Manhattan College Invitational, which is the nation’s largest high school cross-country meet.

In other local high school sports news, Halima Matthews recorded a hat trick, giving her 19 goals on the season, as the Brooklyn Friends girls’ varsity soccer team posted its fifth straight Independent Schools Athletic League win with a 5-0 blanking of LFNY on Wednesday.

The Blue Pride Panthers (5-1-2 overall) also got a goal from Olivia Parnell and brilliant goaltending by Sophie Adelman, who recorded the shutout.

BFS will be in action Friday at Lawrence Woodmere Academy.
