Good morning. Today is the 278th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 4, 1902, warned that the shortage of coal that year could lead to a lack of running water as well. Coal was used to power the machinery that made it possible for running water to reach the top floors of apartment houses.

Well-known people who were born today include author Jackie Collins (’Lucky”), singer-actor Clifton Davis (“That’s My Mama”), actress Rachael Cook (“She’s All That,” “The Baby-Sitters’ Club”), novelist Anne Rice (“Interview With the Vampire”) and actress Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking,” “Thelma and Louise”).
