No American made it to the main draw of the $50,000 annual Carol Weymuller Women’s Squash Open held at the Heights Casino over the weekend.

Fourth-seeded Laura Massaro from England scored a minor upset, sailing through the last three rounds without losing a game. In the final she dominated second-seeded Raneem El Weleily of Egypt 11–8, 11–4, 11–5.

Only unseeded Low Wee Wern of Malaysia gave Massaro some trouble in the first round, winning two games. Fellow Malaysian Nicol David, the top seed, lost in the quarter-finals to qualifier Alison Waters of England.

Local squash fans packed the galleries and cheered enthusiastically the many skilfully executed shots. The tournament is named for former Heights Casino squash pro Carol Weymuller.
