Good morning. Today is the 261st day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Sept. 17, 1900, tells us that Tammany Hall boss Richard Croker was charging that upstate Republicans were causing the price of ice to rise. In those days, before refrigeration, deliveries of ice were essential to keep food fresh, and the iceman was a familiar figure in all neighborhoods. Ice was harvested from lakes upstate, then transported to the city.

Well-known people who were born today include tennis player Tomas Berdych, former football player Mark Brunell, U.S. Senator Charles Grassley (R-Iowa), former basketball player and coach Phil Jackson, comedienne Rita Rudner and former U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter.
