Most counterfeiters try to make a cheap copy of currency. According to the New York Times, Seattle artist Jack Daws did the opposite – he created an 18-karat-gold replica of a penny, then placed it in circulation. The penny was recently “rediscovered” by Brooklyn graphic designer Jessica Reed, who was curious about the gold-covered penny and looked it up on the web. She then e-mailed Daws, who told her she could keep the coin, which is worth approximately $100 in gold.
