Ferry Service Planned From Bridge Park To Governors Island

Will Start From Pier 6

BROOKLYN WATERFRONT — At the end of Atlantic Avenue’s Pier 6, the beginning of planning for ferry service linking Brooklyn Bridge Park and Governors Island was announced Wednesday morning at a press conference.

Standing in the hot sun 500 feet out in the New York Harbor where Pier 6 projects into Buttermilk Channel, officials involved in the “dream” project were introduced by Chris Ward, head of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

Those included were Regina Myer, executive director of the Brooklyn Bridge Park Development Corporation, and Leslie Koch, executive director of the Governors Island Development and Education Corporation.

Exact details about the ferry service were not stated, since the planning is in its early stage and no operator was named. The ferry ride will take three minutes, in comparison with seven minutes from the tip of Manhattan to the island. The proposed ferry to Governors Island from the Atlantic Avenue docking point will probably replace the ongoing ferry service on weekends from Fulton Ferry Landing in DUMBO.

As heavy construction work is underway on Pier 6, participants in the meeting were shuttled to its far western end. Work on Piers 6 and 1 will be completed by the year’s end, the BBPDC has announced frequently.

Governors Island, a former military base, ought to belong to “the Republic of Brooklyn” since it is nearer to Brooklyn than to Manhattan, contends Borough President Marty Markowitz. More or less agreeing with that claim are Assemblywoman Joan Millman and City Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.
