Schools Chancellor Carmen FariƱa made more than a million kids in New York City happy Friday morning when she announced that all of the city’s public schools will be closed due to severe weather conditions caused by winter storm Hercules.

The city waited until 5 a.m. to break the news to anxious parents.

Student after-school programs and PSAL games are also cancelled.

Heavy snow, strong winds and very cold wind chills are expected into early afternoon, and The NYC Office of Emergency Management has issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory for Friday.

Alternate side of the street parking is also suspended Friday. Payment at parking meters will remain in effect throughout the city.

NYC senior centers will be closed Friday as well.

Those without heat should call 3-1-1.
