BAY RIDGE — The theater community is mourning the death of Elizabeth “Betty” Kash, a founding member of Narrows Community Theater (NCT) and a writer-director of many of the company’s productions.
Mrs. Kash died Feb. 24.

She was one of a handful of performers, writers and directors who banded together in 1971 to form Narrows Community Theater, which is now one of Bay Ridge’s most respected theater companies.

For many years, Mrs. Kash served on the theater company’s board of directors.

Narrows Community Theater celebrated its 40th Anniversary last year. The theater group presents two productions a year, according to its website, www.nctheaterny.com.

Susan Huizinga, president of Narrows Community Theater, issued a statement praising Mrs. Kash for her leadership and her artistic contributions to Bay Ridge.

“Betty was one of the staunchest NCT supporters, the funniest person I knew, a passionate, joyous director, and a true lover of theater,” Huizinga stated. “She brought her passion to every board and general meeting, never missed a show in the neighborhood, was at rehearsal for every NCT show, whether personally involved or not and enlivened every person she met with one joke after another. We will miss her wise cracks, sparkling personality, wisdom, and company.”

Respect and admiration for Mrs. Kash spread beyond the Narrows Community Theater group. Anthony Marino, co-founder of brooklynONE Theater, praised Mrs. Kash for her contributions to the arts scene in Bay Ridge.

“Another Bay Ridge legend has left us,” Marino said. “Many people in the theater community of Bay Ridge and beyond were touched by her thoughtful and creative life.”

Mrs. Kash is survived by her five children, her two grandchildren, and her three great-grandchildren.

A wake took place at Clavin Funeral Home at 7720 Fourth Ave. on Feb. 29. A funeral mass is scheduled for Thursday, March 1, at Out Lady of Angels Church, 7320 Fourth Ave., at 10:30 a.m.

Mrs. Kash’s family requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to Narrows Community Theater at: Narrows Community Theater, 9728 Third Ave., No. 527, Brooklyn N.Y., 11209.
