Brooklyn’s summer-long seaside party began on Saturday with Coney Island’s annual Mermaid Parade — and you’ll find a treasure trove of photos at the new BrooklynArchive.com website.

The wildly imaginative aquatic-themed celebration cheered both participants and onlookers along Surf Ave and the Boardwalk. The Brooklyn Eagle caught Miss Piggy, Popeye, Ronald McDonald and the borough president alongside many others, including a stilt-walker, swamp creature, fire-breather and even a walking lighthouse.

The parade — whose costumed co-conspirators seek to appease the sea gods and guarantee safe and sunny months of swimming — has been held every summer since 1983, says founder Dick Zigun, and is in the spirit of Coney Island’s Mardis Gras, which lasted for 50 years through 1954 and symbolized the neighborhood’s quirky past.

All of the Eagle’s Mermaid Parade photos — along with those from hundreds of other events — can be viewed (and purchased) at the new BrooklynPhotoArchive.com website.
