In a surprise move, the Bay Ridge Democrats, a leading progressive political club in Brooklyn, has endorsed Ken Thompson over Charles Hynes in the race for district attorney.

The endorsement came following a vote club members took Tuesday night. Hynes, who lives in Bay Ridge and is running for a sixth term in office, was bypassed by a club in his own neighborhood in favor of Thompson, a former federal prosecutor.

“I am so honored to have the support of the Bay Ridge Democrats. You can count on me to stand up for our values, and fight for justice every day I am in office,” said Thompson, who is running in the Democratic Primary against Hynes.

“From Bay Ridge to Bushwick, the people of Brooklyn are ready for change. As district attorney, I will take a new, smart-on-crime approach to make all of our neighborhoods safer and stronger. Together, we will move forward, showing the people of this city that justice and integrity matter and that law enforcement is on their side again,”  he said.

The Bay Ridge Democrats also endorsed Bill de Blasio for mayor, Letitia James for public advocate, and Scott Stringer for comptroller at the meeting. Councilman Vincent Gentile (D-Bay Ridge-Dyker Heights-Bensonhurst) who is running for a third and final term in office, was endorsed by the club.

“The club is very happy with our slate and we look forward to supporting the campaigns of our candidates from now until Election Day. Each of these candidates has demonstrated to the club that they share the same values that we do about open and honest government, political reform, and support for outer-borough neighborhoods,” a statement from the club read.

Justin Brannan, president of the Bay Ridge Democrats, said members are enthusiastic about de Blasio’s candidacy.

“Bill de Blasio is a principled champion of hard-working middle class New Yorkers. He understands why small businesses are the anchors of our neighborhoods and why income inequality is the defining issue of our time,” http://www.linkedin.com/in/justinleebrannan Brannan said. “For far too long, City Hall has ignored the needs of the outer-boroughs and we’re proud to endorse a leader who not only shares the values that our club was founded on but will stand up for communities across all five boroughs,” he said.

“I’m running for mayor because this administration no longer serves the needs of working and middle class New Yorkers and I’m honored to have Bay Ridge Democrats join us on the campaign this year,” de Blasio said.
