At roughly 2:30 p.m. on Saturday FDNY divers rushed to the East River near the River Café restaurant in Brooklyn to rescue a potential jumper from the Manhattan Bridge. Rescuers anticipated the currents would carry the jumper south to that spot.

According to FDNY, a caller had reported an emotionally disturbed person walking on the roadway of the bridge “who was going to jump.”

It turned out, however, “it was a guy who came out of his car to smoke a cigarette.”

The diver’s expression, shown above, says it all.
