The Wall Street Journal reports that several elected officials, led by Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries, are taking developer Bruce Ratner to task, accusing him of not making good on his promises of creating thousands of jobs and affordable housing units at his Atlantic Yards development. Of the 100 or so jobs that have gone to Brooklyn residents so far, most are relatively low-paying retail positions, not construction jobs, Jeffries charged.
Ratner spokesman Joe DePlasco is quoted as saying that litigation and the economy have “impacted” the number of jobs created, but “over 20 percent of all contract dollars to date have gone to minority firms.” Jeffries is reintroducing a bill to require the state to establish an independent board to negotiate with the developer on behalf of the community.
