Church’s food pantry serves 120 in week before Christmas

The First Presbyterian Church’s Food Pantry, where groceries are distributed each Thursday, served 120 patrons on Dec. 20, the week before Christmas. Each recipient was groceries and a bag of Christmas cookies that the church’s youth group collated. Twenty volunteers helped with the food distribution. The FPC Food Pantry also received a $350 food voucher from Food Bank for New York City for the church’s response to the Hunger Safety Net Agency. The Food Bank sponsors this program. The proceeds will be used to continue the work of the Food Bank in serving New York’s neediest.

First Presbyterian Church reports that on Dec. 27, as this column went to press, the Food Pantry served 86 patrons, with 10 people volunteering.

Fordham professor speaks on faith and financial choices

A popular saying lately is “Jesus Saves!,” with people joking that this adage refers to protecting computer documents frequent or to thrift.

The Brooklyn Oratory presents a talk, “Jesus Saves!,” But What’s His Net Worth? An Evening on Faith and Finances.

The Oratory’s Adult Faith Formation Committee sponsors this program that will examine questions such as, “How does our faith influence our financial and lifestyle decisions? What does the Church teach us on this topic? What does Jesus have to say?”

Fordham theology professor Christine Firer Hinze, Ph.D., will address the relationship between each person’s Catholic faith and economic choices. Individuals from both inside and outside our parish community will speak on how their faith practically influences their day-to-day decision making in this area.

This program takes place on Wednesday, Jan. 16, at 7 p.m., in the Oratory’s Newman Hall. The Brooklyn Oratory is at 111 Willoughby St. in MetroTech.
