Participants hoist a statue of the Virgin Mary during the Saturday's festival of the Virgen de la Asunción at the Church of All Saints at Throop and Flushing avenues, Bedford-Stuyvesant. The festival is part of a series of cultural events held on the days before and after Aug. 15, marking the day Christians believe the Virgin Mary was taken into heaven known as the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
