OPINION: Romney’s pick of Ryan stirs the GOP cause

When GOP candidate Mitt Romney introduced Rep. Paul Ryan as “the next president of the United States,” it seemed to skeptics, at least, that he might actually think the charismatic Wisconsin congressman would make a better chief executive than the often awkward one-time governor of Massachusetts.

Republicans and conservatives had public misgiving about the stiff, lackluster multimillionaire who won the nomination only with the help of master manipulator Karl Rove. (Despite his near indictment during the Bush administration, Rove is back and has already reined in the billionaire Koch Brothers, Shelly Adelson and others. The Rove Financial Complex, aided and abetted by the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United ruling, has amassed almost $1.8 billion, which will could enable it to buy enough seats to control both houses Congress in November.)

After almost seven terms in congress, Ryan clearly has a much better working knowledge of Washington than Romney. And he is articulate, determined and almost righteous, when pushing his much ballyhooed plan.

Despite a slight bounce in the polls, Democrats were immediately assailing the new guy as “Romney’s Brain” (an allusion to the book about Rove titled “Bush’s Brain”).

Democrats claim Ryan is hell bent on eviscerating Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security, and his voluminous record in D.C. lends credibility to their argument.

Lawyers we’ve talked with in and around 360 Adams St. are viewing the Romney-Ryan agenda through a much different prism: many trial lawyers in particular, are convinced a very pliable President Romney would certainly get to appoint one or more justices to the U.S. Supreme Court.

 

“Ironically,” a colleague said, “only Chief Justice Roberts’s surprising shift in the health care bill decision saved the court from doing irreparable damage to its reputation, which is necessary to keep it fair and above the ideological fray.”

 

Funded by hundreds of millions of dollars from insurance companies and big business and coordinated by the Machiavellian Rove, it’s a certainty that team Ryan will seek a top court leaning even more strongly toward “tort reform,” elimination of most jury trials in civil matters and the abolition of contingent fee arrangements.

 

Within just a few days after the Ryan selection was made, Democrats have turned tough and nasty, for a change. By the last weekend any polling edge Ryan provided was dulled by constant, almost vicious attacks by Democrats, led by Vice President Joe Biden, who stated time and again that the Republican team was out to destroy or hamstring Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security!

 

The Ryan nomination no longer seems to be a boon for Romney. In addition there are reports — from right and left — that Ryan’s agenda, perceived to be anti-senior citizen, just might send negative reverberations down to the congressional level endangering the GOP majority in the House of Representatives.
