Not your father’s drive-in: ‘Bike-In Theater’ may return to Brooklyn

Last July, film buffs Jason Anello and Anna Boyarsky put a Brooklyn twist on the classic drive-in experience by hosting a free ‘Bike-In Theater’ night in Williamsburg.

Hundreds of riders parked their bikes against a wall, sat on blankets and watched a movie projected onto the side of a waterfront warehouse. In keeping with the artisonal vibe, the movie snacks included gourmet-flavored popcorn from Brooklyn’s Forking Tasty kitchen.

This year the two colleagues (they both work at a company called Manifold) want to expand on the idea. So they’ve started a Kickstarter campaign to raise the funds to go bi-coastal, with one showing in New York City and another in San Francisco, where Boyarsky lives. With 14 days to go as of Thursday, the two have raised $8,220 out of a total goal of $24,000.

“We love the idea of the old school drive-in but wanted to put a modern twist on that experience,” Anello told the Brooklyn Eagle via email. “We noticed lots of people love to ride bikes lately, love to be environmentally friendly and love cool new experiences. Bike-In-Theater was born.”

Hosting last year’s bike-in in Brooklyn was a no-brainer Anello said that’s where he lives. But this year’s location hasn’t been decided yet. “New York will be in September and San Francisco in October but we need to raise the money on Kickstarter for either to happen this year.”

The campaign promises “amazing food vendors, bike parking and a giant lot to lounge out in and watch the film with friends.” Donors to the Kickstarter campaign will receive any number of perks from commemorative tickets, to T-shirts, to plane tickets and accommodations depending on how much they kick in.
