Marine Park Intermediate School Builders Club Goes Red for Women’s Health

MARINE PARK — On Friday, Feb.10,  the halls of Marine Park Intermediate School were a sea of red. Students, staff, and faculty all banded together to “Go Red” for women’s health. Participants sported the color red in many creative and unusual ways, including the purchasing of “Go Red” bands supplied by Dr. Mardie Sheiken, herself a heart surgery survivor. Others donated one dollar to support the American Heart Association to make their mission known. In total the school raised almost $300.00.

“Many of the students donated their own money to help support this worthy cause. This is typical of the type of students we have here at Marine Park Intermediate School,” said Regina Kieran, the faculty advisor for the Builders Club. The Builders Club, a branch of Kiwanis, was established at Marine Park Intermediate School six years ago, and is sponsored by the Parkway East Kiwanis Club.

Last year, The Marine Park Intermediate School Builders club had the honor of being named as an Honorable Mention in the Department of Education’s first ever Service in Schools Awards, for which the reward was a trip to Gracie Mansion and pictures with Mayor Bloomberg and School Chancellor Walcott.

To date this year, the Builders Club’s members have trick or treated for UNICEF, held a toy drive to benefit the Ft. Hamilton Army Base’s annual holiday party, held a food drive to benefit NYC food bank, created handmade cards and placemats to benefit Meals on Wheels and more.

Faculty coordinator Regina Kieran has been fully supported by the faculty and administration, especially Principal Debra Garofalo.  Mrs. Kieran says, ”The faculty never fails to amaze me!  No matter who we are trying to help, they are always there to support the club any way they can.”
