AN EARLY MORNING Yoga class will take place this morning at 7:30 a.m. at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Pier 6 lawns. Dodge YMCA will lead the event. The class will focus on integrating postures, breathing exercises, relaxation and meditation. If you have your own yoga mat, you are encouraged to bring it.

IMMIGRART: Storytelling and Art as Tools for Immigrant Justice will take place today from 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Brooklyn Public Library’s Dweck Center. Filmmakers, authors and advocates will share their expertise in expanding conversation about immigration. The event is facilitated by New York Immigration Coalition. Atlas: DIY will show young immigrants’ works.

“VIRTUAL UNREALITY” by Charles Seife will be launched tonight at powerHouse Arena from 7 to 9 p.m. Seife’s book focuses on digital information and on the power and rapid manner in which it spreads. He is a bestselling author who previously wrote “Proofiness” and “Zero.”

ON THIS DAY in 1997, Britain ceded claim to Hong Kong. Britain’s lease for Hong Kong had expired on this day in 1997, and instead of renewing the lease, Britain lowered its flag. Britain’s crested flag was replaced by a bauhinia flower, which represented China’s sovereignty and official transfer of power.

“GONE WITH THE WIND” was published on this day in 1936. The Margaret Mitchell novel of Civil War South later was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award as best novel of 1936.

BROOKLYN-BORN Lena Horne was born on this day in 1917. Horne was a singer, who began her career with a chorus line in Harlem at age 16. She later began a Broadway and Hollywood career and became a major symbol for African-American actors and singers of the time. A signature performance of hers was “Stormy Weather.” She died in New York City in 2010.

THE NATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR WOMEN was founded at Washington, D.C., on this day in 1966. NOW was founded by people attending the Third National Conference on the Commission on the Status of Women. NOW’s purpose is to take action to bring women into full partnership into mainstream America.

ON THIS DAY IN 1900, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Out of Town Singers Streaming into Town.”
The article focused on an annual singing festival that was to happen the next day at the Armory.
“The members of the singing societies who are to participate in the nineteenth national singing festival of the saengerbund of the northeastern states began to arrive this morning…” the article wrote. “[It’s] expected that there will be 30,000 of them here by to-morrow.”
