Thousands of students took to the Brooklyn Bridge after school Thursday as part of a citywide protest against cuts to education spending.

Student representatives from the New York City public high schools complained about slashed budgets and for-profit corporate takeovers, while students from the CUNY and SUNY systems and private colleges like NYU said that tuition hikes are putting college out of reach.

NYU Ph.D. student Peter Wirzbicki said that NYU students graduate with more debt — $35,000 — than anywhere else in the country. The placards represent Mayor Bloomberg, Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott and other educational leaders.
