THIS WEEK’S Wednesday Night Tour at Brooklyn Bridge Park focuses on native plants in designed landscapes tonight at 6:30 p.m. at the Pier 1 entrance.  The tour will be led by Ulrich Lorimer of Brooklyn Botanical Garden.  

“THE SILENT HISTORY” by Eli Horowitz and Matthew Derby will be launched tonight at powerHouse Arena from 7 to 9 p.m.  Special guests for the event include Sloane Crosley, Alex Wagner and Eszter Balint.

METROPOLITAN OPERA, part of a Summer Recital Series, will take place tonight from 7 to 9 p.m. at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s Harbor View Lawn.

GEORGE ORWELL was born on this day in 1903. Orwell was an English satirist and author who is known for his books “Animal Farm” and “1984.”  He died in 1950.

TODAY IS THE ANNIVERSARY of three significant Supreme Court rulings.  In 1990, the Supreme Court ruled that it was unconstitutional for a state to require that a minor notify both parents before obtaining an abortion.  In 1962, the Supreme Court ruled that a pray read aloud in public schools violated the First Amendment’s separation of church and state.  Lastly, in 1990, the court ruled that it was the constitutional right of a person to refuse life-sustaining medical treatment.

THE FIRST COLOR TV Broadcast was sent over the air by CBS on this day in 1951.  The four-hour program was carried by stations in New York City, Baltimore, Philadelphia, Boston and Washington, D.C.  However, no color sets were owned by the public at the time.

THE KOREAN WAR BEGAN on this day in 1950.  Forces from northern Korea invaded the southern area, which began a civil war.

ON THIS DAY IN 1901, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published an article titled “Ten More Smallpox Cases.”  The article focuses on a smallpox outbreak in Brooklyn.
“There were ten persons suffering from smallpox removed from Brooklyn to the Riverside Hospital yesterday,” the article wrote.
