Good morning. Today is the 281st day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Oct. 8, 1889, reported on a pennant-race baseball game the previous day between the Brooklyn Grays (later the Brooklyn Dodgers) and the Baltimore Orioles. The game was played in Baltimore, and, according to the Eagle, “Wild throws by Clark and O’Brien gave the Baltimore three of their runs and the game to-day.” The 19th century Baltimore Orioles were not the Baltimore Orioles of today – rather, they were a team that moved to New York in 1901 and eventually became the Yankees.

Well-known people who were born today include children’s author Faith Ringgold (“Tar Beach,” “My Dream of Martin Luther King”), comedian-actor Chevy Chase (“Caddyshack”), actor Matt Damon (“the Bourne Identity,” “Good Will Hunting”), gossip columnist Rona Barrett and actress Sigourney Weaver (“Ghostbusters,” “Gorillas in Our Midst”).
