Good morning. Today is the 277th day of the year. On this day in 1902, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle reported that a shortage of coal, which was the main fuel for heating in those days, could also lead to a water shortage. “Every drop of water must be pumped,” the Eagle reported. “Water cannot even get into the borough without coal, and plenty of it, to power the pumping stations. Without coal, the water will stay on Long Island, miles and miles from town.”

Well-known people who were born today include author Jackie Collins, actress Susan Sarandon (“Dead Man Walking,” ‘Thelma and Louise”), baseball manager Jimy Williams and novelist Anne Rice (“Interview With the Vampire.”
