Good morning. Today is the 298th day of the year. On Oct. 25, 1841, the Brooklyn Daily Eagle (then called the Brooklyn Eagle and Kings Democrat) first appeared. Among the items mentioned on the front page were a proposal for a “seminary for young ladies,” the establishment of an evening school by the Brooklyn Apprentices Library Association, a timetable for Long Island Rail Road trains leaving from Atlantic Avenue, a temperance meeting, and the hiring of a new principal for Erasmus Hall Academy.

Well-known people who were born today include former college basketball coach Bobby Knight, baseball player Pedro Martinez, singer-songwriter Helen Reddy (“I Am Woman”) and author Anne Tyler (“The Accidental Tourist”).
