Good morning. Today is the 308th day of the year. Since Halloween has just passed, a reference to an article on vampires might seem appropriate. The Nov. 4, 1892 issue of the Brooklyn Daily Eagle contained an article titled “A Human Vampire and a Murderer.” The article reported that James Brown, a sailor who had been convicted of being a vampire in 1867, had been moved from a prison to a mental institution. After two of the crew members of his ship had gone missing, Brown was found sucking blood from the dead body of one of the sailors. The other body was found nearby.

Well-known people who were born today include former first lady Laura Bush, actor Ralph Macchio (“The Karate Kid”), actress Loretta Swit (“M*A*S*H*”), football player Orlando Pace, football player David Hester and rapper Sean “Diddy” Combs.
