Good morning. Today is the 311th day of the year. The Brooklyn Daily Eagle of Nov. 6, 1863, contained an account of conditions within a Confederate prison by a former prisoner of war. The writer said the main rations were bread of very poor quality, beef that was very tough, rice, and peas and beans that often had worms in them. Many of the prison guards, he wrote, were people who themselves had been convicted of criminal offenses before the war. After the Battle of Gettysburg, he said, conditions improved somewhat, and more vegetables were added to the diet.

Well-known people who were born today include singer-songwriter Glenn Frey, actor Ethan Hawke, actress Emma Stone and film and stage director Mike Nichols.
